SHORT COURSES (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Short Course I: Sunday, June 7 – 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Power BI for Reserves and Reservoir Engineering

Speaker: Zack Warren – Velocity Insight

Reserves and reservoir engineering workflows often require detailed reporting on top of a wide range of data sources, which is a perfect fit for Business Intelligence (BI) tools.  Power BI is Microsoft’s answer to applications like Spotfire and Tableau, and it’s a good fit for many companies.

This class teaches how to use Power BI on top of typical E&P data sources like ARIES databases and daily production data.  It’s designed for current Excel or Spotfire users that are new to Power BI (generally <40 hrs hands-on experience).  We’ll cover connecting to datasets, data modeling/calculations, and report building.  You’ll take home some real Power BI files that work, and be equipped to take the next steps back at the office.  Plus we’ll cover how AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT can be used together with BI tools, which is making these solutions more and more accessible.  Class size limited to 15 attendees.

Short Course II: Tuesday, June 9 – 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Practical Uses of AI in Petroleum Engineering

Speakers: Zack Warren, Two Others TBD

This 4-hour interactive workshop introduces petroleum engineering professionals to practical commercial AI applications, focusing on large language models, Claude Code, production forecasting, and other common uses. Through guided discussions and real-world examples, attendees will learn how to effectively use AI tools without hands-on computer work, including crafting useful prompts, recognizing common AI errors, and selecting appropriate applications for their daily tasks. Participants will leave equipped with actionable knowledge to confidently integrate AI into their workflows to enhance productivity and decision-making.

Short Course III: Wednesday, June 10 – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Quantifying Subsurface Uncertainty and Risk

Speakers: Creties Jenkins – Rose Subsurface Assessment LLC

This course provides strategies, tactics, and tools to effectively assess and value subsurface projects for hydrocarbon extraction and carbon storage. The premise is that sound estimating of key geoscience, engineering, and economic parameters is essential for maximizing profitability. Probabilistic techniques and a staged approach are emphasized to quantify the range of possible outcomes and make good decisions about which projects are worthy of capital investment.
