SHORT COURSES (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Short Course I: Saturday 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Monograph 5 presents a comprehensive technical analysis of Type Well Profiles (TWPs), including preparation, use, uncertainty analysis, recognition and management of bias, documentation, and validation. The monograph provides an in-depth analysis and comparison of two TWP construction methods: the production averaging method and the parameterization method.
While TWPs have been used in the industry for decades, there are ways in which TWPs can be improperly generated and/or the results of those TWPs can be misapplied for the intended purpose. Published TWPs frequently fail to adequately disclose important aspects of the construction methodology or the quality and quantity of the underlying data. Furthermore, uncertainty is inherent within TWPs. Monograph 5 investigates this uncertainty, identifying key sources and setting out robust methods to quantify the impact. Validation using hind-casting techniques can provide valuable feedback to evaluators preparing and using TWPs, provided that inherent uncertainty is considered. These issues are examined in detail within Monograph 5, with recommended practices subsequently presented for consideration.

This three-hour short course will offer a refreshed overview of several of the Monograph 5 workflows for generation, uncertainty assessment, documentation, and validation of TWPs. Most importantly, participants will engage in several examples using a series of provided spreadsheets to illustrate the execution of several key Monograph 5 workflows. It is highly recommended that participants have already attended a prior Monograph 5 Annual Meeting short course. This particular short course will not provide a comprehensive review of Monograph 5 concepts and workflows.

Short Course II: Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Asset Valuation Workshop and Short Course is a four-hour session designed to provide participants with a structured understanding of asset valuation principles, techniques, and practical applications. The course begins with an introduction to valuation fundamentals, discussing key principles and their role in financial decision-making, regulatory compliance, and market transactions. Participants will explore various valuation methodologies, including cash flow-based valuation, fair market value assessment, and securities valuation in financial markets. These topics will be examined through real-world applications, emphasizing sensitivity analysis, risk assessment, and the integration of market data. The session also highlights the importance of reserves and resource estimation, cash flow modeling, and auxiliary assessments such as carbon intensity, energy transition contributions, and community impact considerations.

The workshop concludes with an expert panel discussion involving experts across different disciplines, including accounting, finance, banking, and M&A, where industry professionals will share insights on valuation challenges, market dynamics, and regulatory considerations. This interactive session allows participants to ask questions and refine their approach to valuation, ensuring they leave with practical knowledge applicable to their professional roles.

Short Course III: Tuesday 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The 2024 Software Symposium in October provided a rich dataset of automated forecasts from fifteen different software providers. Our initial Symposium analysis highlighted key trends, which the committee shared as part of a roadshow to different local chapters across the country. With the benefit of valuable feedback from our roadshow attendees and some additional time, the Committee is now excited to delve deeper into more specialized topics.  If you liked one of the roadshow lunch meetings, you’re going to love this!

This course sets a top former civil war grounds and features historical markers throughout the course describing events which took place on the Island.
