Abstract: When preparing an estimate of reserves, a reserve evaluator reviews both volumetric uncertainty and commercial risk. This presentation develops a technique for evaluating whether the reserve evaluator has made an appropriate estimate of the volume uncertainty.
The technique uses a statistical study of technical revisions over time to determine whether an initial booking had the correct probability of being exceeded by future production. Results are presented for 20 proved reserve filings to the SEC to determine if the original filing conformed to the spirit of the definition of reasonable certainty.
Bio: Originally from Calgary, Canada, Gregg has been living in the UK for 20 years. He is a reservoir engineering advisor to Oxy working in London on assets in Africa. He has 25 years of experience in field development, numerical simulation, production forecasting, reserve reporting and international arbitration gained in a mixture of operating and consulting roles.
Gregg has held development roles at Devon Energy, Tullow Oil, Anadarko Petroleum and now at Oxy. Gregg has an entrepreneurial predisposition which has led him to own and operate a small consultancy firm and to serve as the director of a private oil and gas operating company in Canada.
Gregg is an active member of the SPEE serving as the secretary of the European Chapter and he was elected to the board of the SPEE in 2020.
